Wu Tang Clan - 8 Diagrams review

I think it took about 6 seconds for this to leak. Its not available until december 11, but it appeared on the net last week, and being the scurvy pirate connoisseur that I am - I naturally downloaded it promptly. I've had it on rotation in the Ipod beatbox that i carry around on my shoulder like an awesome cunt all the time, and have formed enough of an opinion to write a review.
and here it is:
Its pretty good.end of review.
There are some tracks with that almost capture that classic Wu sound, and those tracks win. Tracks like "Take it back" - which reminds me slightly of 'daytona 500' for some reason, and "Weak Spot" are what make this album good. The track with the beatles sample, but not actually a beatles sample, is up there as one of the better ones on the album. So if you liked that, you'll like the rest of the album. Unfortunately there are a couple that are.... well, a bit odd. After listening to this, i've come to the conclusion that the Rza should probably not be left alone in the studio too long, cause then you end up with tracks like "sunlight". I'm sure there are dudes who walk around with chess boards who have mathematical theories about the human genome and the koran who will listen to this and go "wow, this dude is a genius". Most everyone else will wonder if Rza meant to say it all out loud. The opening track, "campfire" would be real dope if it didn't keep stopping to congratulate itself so often. Apart from those little points, its pretty strong throughout. There's a dope ODB tribute at the end, and strong appearances from everyone you would expect. Anything with Rae, Meth and Ghost on it in there current form is going to be good really. It never quite reaches the levels set by their earlier releases, if you want stuff of that calibre - you might want to look into Cilvaringz recent album. But this is still a strong offering and worth a listen.
I give it 8/10

Take It Back is very Daytona 500-ish indeed, mainly 'cause they're both built on samples from the Bob James classic Nautilus.
yes! thankyou, that was bothering me.
Smart review.
the album is a clear 10, solely on the fact that it will be the best album you'll hear for at leat since fishscale, which was a classic, but not as good as this. I don't know why they put starter on the album, and I thought method man and his buddy streetlife are officially washed up. Method Man spits the most generic rhymes that you hear at leat 50 times on any album, he's done and needs to stick to very small roles. He was pure garbage on the whole album except like 2-3 verses, but he's in every damn track.
Just listened to the album for the first time. Overall its mediocre. Deceiving beats, tired rappers. This is Wu tan with 10years more. Less than 4tracks are actually listenable in company, the rest is the kind of tracks that you listen alone in your room because the CD player is too far from the cupboard your repairing such as RZa's track Sunlight. The track uses the old "World is Ova, Love will saves us" concept but its boring and embarassing in regard to all his previous solo work which is brilliant, On the bright side, Raekwon shines on a couple of tracks, another couple of tracks such as Campfire and the little gem which is ODB's hommage; 16th Chamber.
It seems like Wu tang a re a bit lost, they are sat on the fence. On one side a need to attract a younger audience, recreating a Wu-revolution like after their second album, and on the other to accept their age and the public who respects them for their niche work.
This album and Ghostface's album came out at basically the same time. What fans expect from WuTang they can find on Ghostface's album, it is more reminiscent of classic Wu than the WuTang album. Its awesome. 8 Diagrams is a Rza album musically. If you open your mind and listen to this album in your car just a little blunted, you will find yourself screaming fuckyeah and rewinding to hear those raps again. Trust me on this. It opens slowly, but builds to a tight 7-8 song climax with highlights like Rushing Elephants. The dramatic drum beats accented with deep strings, Unpredictable with its tense sticcato baseline, wailing guitar and building beat progression... Windmill is amazing too. I didn't like the 1st listen either but listen again, its very creative, aggressive, intelligent, this album is great. For fuck's sake, this isn't a kanye west album, and I doubt you'll catch the Rza backstage whining about not getting an award from MTV for it.
"One man, can uplift your land, like method man standing on the hands of fans"
After repeated listens i find the '8 diagrams' material plays out best in this selected sequence;1.Camp Fire 2.Take It Back 3.Rushing Elephants 4.Unpredictable 5.The Heart Gently Weeps(video version) 6.Guns Will Go 7.Watch Ur Mouf(ommitted track)8.Windmill 9.Weak Spot 10.Life Changes 11.16th Chamber 12.Thug World(alternate version of 'Unpredictable').Absence of 'Watch Ur Mouf' from the official album is tragic.
