More Rap Reviews

I have a small archive of these things.

Conseps & Patti – The Ice Breaker

If you scratch the surface in Adelaide you are sure to find a bunch of very talented and lesser known Hip Hop crews just awaiting the chance to break out and raise the roof on our already fresh Hip Hop scene, this is true with Conseps & Patti. Local southside boys and Adroit Effusive crew members have dropped this tight mixtape (I use that term begrudgingly) of all original songs mixed by the turntable genius DJ Kansel. ‘The Ice Breaker’ is 16 tracks of Patti & Conseps flexing their impressive lyrical skills, the flows are tight and subject matter is straight hip hop. Beats are dope stretching from moody and dark to lighthearted and bouncy showing that Concepts is a very diverse producer. There is an extensive list of DJ guests with Ad-Fu, Snair, Juice and Sum1, also some dope vocal features with Trials, Sesta, Dev and Bornski. Go source a copy and break the ice.

De La Soul – The Impossible Mission

Another so called mixtape (did I miss the point where mixtapes were put together by dj’s to flex their musical taste and djing skills?) from the prolific crew De La Soul. After their label issues with Tommy Boy De La have appeared a little lost, their last album seemed a little lack luster to me so I was keen to see where these guys were going to go with this mixtape. De La put forward mostly new originals mixed in with some live material and exclusive tracks from the De La Soul is Dead era, Posdenous narrates the album letting you know what’s what. What is interesting is they have dropped the r&b influences that their last 3 albums have been littered with and gone back to a much more straight up style, lyrically De La are still on top of their game dropping playful rhymes whilst maintaining some serious content. If this is a sign of what De La Soul have in store for the future De La are definitely not dead.

Hilltop Hoods – The Hard Road 12”

Normally I wouldn’t review a single, but one as feature packed as ‘The Hard Road’ really needs something said about it. ‘The Hard Road’ was one of the stand out tracks to me on their latest LP of the same name that vocal sample is just incredible, and lyrically the story of the path they traveled puts the shivers up your spine. What makes this single stand out is the amount of remixes featured the Suffa Remix put a nice spin on the original with a smooth soulful beat making it hard to choose which version your going to call your favorite. Plutonic (from Muph & Plutonic and producer of a large chunk of Pegz’ material) also tries his hand at remixing ‘The Hard Road’ completely switching the vibe sounding more like something Buckwild would of produced in the mid 90’s and replacing the vocal sample with scratching. Sesta of the Funkoars remixes ‘Recapturing the Vibe’ making a completely new song out of the solid original. If all this isn’t enough instrumentals for the original ‘The Hard Road’ and Suffa’s remix are included and if you buy it on CD you also get a copy of ‘The Hard Road’ film clip.

Rap Reviews

Good afternoon people. Once a month I write some reviews for a local street press, I've been hesitant to put them up here cause the writing isn't all that great (the word count kills me, not to mention an 8th grade edumaction). But in the quest of keeping this shit updated in between my busy day to day life I figured why the hell not!

Def Wish Cast – The Legacy Continues

A return from one of Australia’s most influential rap acts ever. Die C, Def Wish and Sereck have reformed to drop their second album some 14 years after their incredible ‘Knights of the Underground’. The sound of this album is a unique mix of 808’s, funk, electro and old school hip hop, add their reminiscent lyrics to this and you end up with a real throwback sound. Like early electro the beats go though an evolution from the start of the track with many break downs, bridges and complete beat changes. This throwback to the mid 80’s mixed with current production and sampling techniques could make this album slightly hard to listen to for the uninitiated, but the energy and quality of ‘The Legacy Continues’ will keep the fans headphones being tightly held to their ears. Def Wish Cast have come through with a very unique album and it’s surely going to inspire a whole new generation just as they did 14 years ago.

Boot Camp Clik – The Last Stand

This crew has been busy! Recently dropping a series of stand out albums (Sean Price, Buckshot, Tek & Steele) they’ve quickly followed them up with a posse album. BCC were extremely influential in the mid 90’s and their work through ‘05 and ‘06 is showing they haven’t lost any of what made them such a power house back then. The production list reads like a who’s who of the current hip hop scene with Marco Polo, Da Beatminerz, 9th Wonder, Pete Rock and Large Professor all credited, with an all star list of producers and an all star list of MC’s you know your going to get an absolute banger! ‘The Last Stand’ might not be as consistent as some of the other BCC material of late, but it’s worth picking up just on the strength of the real dope joints on there.

Busta Rhymes – The Big Bang

Busta returns on Dr Dre’s Aftermath imprint with his 7th solo release. If there is something the Leader of the New School knows how to do is make some club bangers and having Dr Dre and Swizz Beats receiving production credits you know this is going to be some special shit. Don’t get it twisted though this isn’t all for the club with ‘New York Shit’, ‘Cocaina’, ‘Goldmine’ and ‘Don’t Get Carried Away’ aimed straight at the street. Busta has stepped up with his lyricism and when not spitting over a club beat he really flexes some skills. The list of guests shows the diversity of this album with Stevie Wonder and everyone’s favorite bitch slapper Rick James representing the over 50’s and Missy Elliot, Q Tip, Nas, Raekwon and Will.I.Am representing the new school. This album brings the best of both the club and the street on one record, worth checking if you’re in to either.
