Tribute to Big Pun (RIP)

Cuban Link's new joint, Chain Reaction is out and about now. And while I have not heard the whole thing yet, I'm certainly going to be checking for it based on the strength of the last track. "Letter to pun" is one of the better tribute tracks I've heard. Some kind soul posted it on ozhiphop.com and I thought I would share it with you all. Link was originally going to drop his debut, 24K, on atlantic - but that went sour after a conflict with Fat Joe saw him leave the Terror Squad behind. This was 5 years ago, so its fair to say that heads have been waiting for his debut for more than a minute now. So far Chain Reaction has been getting quite favourable reviews. Like I say, i haven't heard it - but from the sounds of it, it's going to be worth purchasing. Check the Mp3 below

I got a letter from the government, the other day

I opened and read it, it said Slick Rick wasn't aloud in the country...

So I thought I'd write one of my own.

Dear Mr. Howard,

The "all stars" concert has been postponed due to certain agencies of our government deciding that The Ruler is not aloud to come here. I'm writing to protest. I was looking forward to that show, I was genuinely excited. But nooooooooooooo. pfft. America want him out, and we dont want him in. If I could get the US Government to ask you, would you be cool with it then? I mean - they've been trying to deport him for years, it shouldn't be too hard. It didn't take much to get us involved in something as vague as 'the war on terrorism' and send the SAS in to Afghanistan AND Iraq, all George had to do was ask you. Surely we can let Slick Rick in here for a holiday. After all, he is English - and the last time i checked, the dress code doesn't apply for anyone with a UK passport hanging from their lanyard. If we can let these blokes in here for cricket and rugby matches, then surely they can spare a spot for the man who gave us children's story. He doesn't cause trouble, he doesn't bother nobody... he's just the man thats on the mic, and if you let him off the flight - he'd rock the mic right. He's not your typical Pom either - I swear! He's not going to complain about the weather, or the food, or the beer, or the sport, or the accent, and he wont get all painted up and cheer when some ponce kicks a last minute goal and wins the rugby world cup - then spend the next few years rubbing it in. He'll be good, you have my word. And dont worry about his criminal record, his rap ones are much better. Besides, he's reformed - look how trustworthy he is:

"I love Australia guys!"

So please Mr. Prime Minister, let Slick Rick in the country. I promise I'll stop cheating on my taxes* and I will vote Liberal for ever and ever and ever from now on*.

Kind Regards,
Headlock
The Premium Blend

* This is not a promise or guarantee. Also if anyone from the ATO is reading this, I dont cheat on my taxes and all those movie receipts really were training films. Thanks.

Where are they now?

The B.U.M.S.

Whatever happened to the B.U.M.S. (Brothas Unda Madness)?
They dropped a great debut LP called Lyfe N Tyme and then.... nothing. Actually thats not true, I apologise. There were a number of singles that came with the album, and one before it, and they did a guest spot on the Streetfighter 2 soundtrack (that was much better than the movie). But since then, what have they been up to? I'm serious - if anyone knows, post a comment.
Anyway, at the time they dropped there was a bit of noise around the release. It was on heavy rotation in the Source (at a time when it was still worth reading) and E-Vocalist's verse from the first track, "Non Stoppin the Groove", got in there as a hip hop quotable. Sway and King Tech of the world famous Wake Up Show were executive producers, and the whole thing is put together very well. Most of the production is handled by Joe Quixx, with a couple exceptions. 'Take a look around' was produced by Fredwreck Nassar who did a 'phuntastick job' as the current guphinor of kuliphornia would say, 'West Coast Smack' (another banger) was produced by the Baka Boyz and 'Can you do without?' was produced by King Tech himself. This is a great album IMO, When it came out in 95 i think it was, I bought it on Tape Cassette and rocked it almost every day until it eventually met its demise when i dropped my POS walkman. As a tribute to how much i liked this album, i actually took the tape reals out and put them in a new casing, which took about 4 hours cause the tape got all twisted. I think that tape got stolen at a party - and if the person who stole it is reading this, I hope you are lonely and have to marry an ugly girl with a bad personality out of desperation. I recently tracked it down on Ebay, which is the reason for the renewed interest. If you see it, or have it burried away in your crates somewhere, dig it out and have a listen.

Righteous fist of Kirk

Another update on the status of our radio show.

We sat down with members of 3D radio on Sunday and had a very positive discussion about coming back in to the warm and loving arms of our radio brotherhood. Our old timeslot *might* be free still, and we have re-applied for it. Hopefully this all goes well and we will back on and rocking soon. Which, personally, I am looking forward to. I have a bunch of new music that I'm dying to play - and even though by the time we're back on, it probably wont be 'new' anymore - it still brings a small measure of excitement into my otherwise dull and dreary existence.

I've also been sent a bunch of demo discs that I have yet to even listen to. Perhaps this week I should sit down and have a listen to them. We might find some new gems to breath life into the genre of Shit Hop. My crusade to showcase the talents of the many raptards of the world is never ending.

While I'm here, I would like to impress upon anyone who is reading (IF there is anyone still reading) - how good the new Pegz album is. Its good. Not only is it good, its damn good. I was lucky enough to have a bit of an advance listen to it - and I'm really looking forward to its release.

I've been disappointed with a lot of the stuff coming out lately. Things that I really thought were going to be good, but turned out not to be. So I'll forgive you if you dont take my word for it.
I feel guilty giving bad advice. I think it stems from once recommending Outkast - Atliens to a friend without listening to it first, and then finding out that it was shit after they forked out $35 for it. But i digress.
Give this album a listen at the store if you see it. You wont regret it. To be honest, I thought Pegz first full length was let down a bit by the production - and thankfully this time, I cannot say the same thing. Plutonic lab's production gets better with every album - and he's hit a new high score on this LP. The lyrics are predictably excellent - I dont think Pegz is capable of writing a shit rhyme, Time after time his lyrics astound me. I could go on for hours about why I think he's a brilliant MC, but I'll let you figure it out for yourself - have a listen to one of the tracks off the new album below:
